What will I tell God when he asks me: where are those “living stones” that I entrusted to you?
Text
“If the parents are in some sense the foundations of the home, the children are like the “living stones” of the family.” (The Joy of Love, n.14)
Commentary
Building the Kingdom of God is not an abstract task, and spouses can contribute to it through their children. While acknowledging that each child is a gift from God, one can also maintain that spouses have this task in the world and the Church as their most proper mission. They bring forth these “living stones” that are their children, and as parents, they ensure that they stay “alive” and allow the Word of God to grow within them.
To build, construct, form, educate, sculpt with hard work, effort, and many hours of dedication. Renouncing to build a house while still laying the foundation is similar to the servant’s attitude, who buried the talent given to him by his Sir. In any case, building a couple of floors isn’t the same as building five or ten.
What is my contribution to the expansion of the Kingdom of God? Is all the generosity that I am capable of, allowing me to build a little or a lot of the highest building I possibly can? Am I lukewarm or magnanimous in fulfilling my duty as a father or mother?
