Without love, there is no life!
Without love, there is no happiness!
Without love, there is no future!
Text
“The couple that loves and begets life is a true living icon capable of revealing God the Creator and Saviour. For this reason, fruitful love becomes a symbol of God’s inner life (cf. Gen 1:28; 9:7; 17:2-5, 16; 28:3; 35:11; 48:3-4). This is why the Genesis account, following the “priestly tradition,” is interwoven with various genealogical accounts (. The ability of human couples to beget life is the path along which the history of salvation progresses. Seen this way, the couple’s fruitful relationship becomes an image for understanding and describing the mystery of God himself.” (The Joy of Love, n.11)
Commentary
Love and life go hand-in-hand. But, in addition, a life that contains love ignites and resurrects everything. That is why we say, with simple spontaneity but enormous depth: “you are my life, my love” or “my beloved, without your love, I cannot live.”
Every true love is fruitful; it puts life into everything. It even actually brings into existence children; it gives them their life. Fruitfulness can grow unrestrictedly because we can always love more and better. Growth is the logic of life and love.
As a gynecologist, I have been present in many deliveries; therefore, I’ve witnessed the moment when human life, ready alive in its mother’s womb, is born. From the very beginning, that “little human” that each one of our newborns is, continues to grow enthusiastically and energetically nestled by the love of his parents. Oblivious to us, time goes by, and that child grows older. While this takes place, parents and children have been writing a love story between them, a story filled with every type of event and feeling imaginable.
Likewise, when I’ve received a couple – spouses that love each other – I’ve been privy to how they can overcome any difficulty and move forward, grow, and, above all, wait for their son, the fruit of their love, with deep hope. Their secret is to face together, that is to say: united, in common harmony, what life brings them, the good and the bad, turning it – even trials and difficulties – into occasions to become more united and to love each other better.
A union of love can endure all things. It can always grow and conquer what may come. There is strength in numbers. One must understand this well: keeping our union of love alive and restoring it, when necessary, “without ever giving up” is victory. One could even call “never giving up” conjugal love´s fidelity.
