Big companies request a “high level of commitment” for the best positions. What about your marriage?

Text

“A love that is weak or infirm, incapable of accepting marriage as a challenge to be taken up and fought for, reborn, renewed and reinvented until death, cannot sustain a great commitment.” (The Joy of Love, n.124)

Commentary

I like the way Pope Francis frames conjugal love and other familial loves within the framework of courage, heroism, and a high level of commitment. That is why I understand that married life, in other words, preserving that union of love, making it grow, and restoring it when wounded, is a path of holiness. Sainthood – whatever path God calls us through – is never going to be a matter of minimums and mediocrities. It is not a slide but an ascent. It will always be a path towards excellence, and excellence requires commitment: a love invested in a joint project.
