Commitment to companionship and support

Some leeches and vampires are not literary fiction. Some people “consume” their families. Don´t be that vampire or leech!

Text

“Can come to be seen as a way station, helpful when convenient, or a setting in which rights can be asserted while relationships are left to the changing winds of personal desire and circumstances.” (The Joy of Love, n.34)

Commentary

Family bonds may weaken as selfishness becomes more prevalent among relatives. Their house can become a lodging where clean food and services are supplied; parents can become providers who obligatorily deliver these services, in addition to paying for education, clothing, and giving pocket money; the family as a whole can become a group of people who are roommates and, with some luck, share a couple of moments as a whole. Each one goes his own way, and they do not consider each other a “we,” a team in which each one takes care of everyone. A team in which they all collaborate according to their possibilities.

A family relationship cannot be reduced to simply enjoying the services and goods your father and mother provide. Neither is it sharing the same address, colonizing each space, or taking advantage of your relatives by abusing their affection, benevolence, and generosity. A family home is a commitment of companionship and help, nurturing the various bonds of love with everyday actions, preserving and developing them, solving problems together, and healing any friction between them.

Do you go about life as a burden for your family? Are you similar to a heavy backpack that they must carry? Do not act like a vampire! Do not act like a leech! Lovingly, place your family on your back and in your heart, and carry them through!
