Do you want to love and be loved? Learn to love genuinely. Do not destroy your heart with illusions and falsehoods.
Text
“…the primary objective is to help each to learn how to love this very real person with whom he or she plans to share his or her whole life.” (The Joy of Love, n.208)
Commentary
Learn to love…loudly, truly, seriously. Do not drown in the colossal emptiness that has become a pandemic nowadays. “We wore born through love, for love.” We feel inside the need to be loved and also to love. However, we must learn this. We do not know how to walk or speak at birth; it is taught to us, so we learn it.
Today, many men and women believe that loving is something spontaneous, almost like breathing or digestion. They do not realize that it is the fruit of maturity and acquired knowledge, for loving means to give oneself and embrace the other´s intimacy within ours. If our intimacy does not mature, if we have left it empty, neglected, superficial, and selfish, it will be tough for us to love truly. Moreover, if we do not educate it, we are in great peril of causing harm and harming ourselves a great deal. Those who have had a home and learned to love from their parents are hopefully better equipped, but we must also accompany them because an erroneous or misleading environment can make them confused. They may be drawn to love those who do not know how to love or reciprocate. Those people will hurt them. Teaching our children to love is a great responsibility and challenge for those of us who have spent more years loving. We must show it naturally in everyday life because one teaches love by loving.
