“The word of God tells us that the family is entrusted to a man, a woman, and their children, so that they may become a communion of persons in the image of the union of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” (The Joy of Love, n.29)
Commentary
The goal set for the human family is very high: to be a communion of love in the image of the “divine family ” of God the Trinity. Such a level would be impossible to achieve without the help of God, who takes us by the hand to lift us, inspire, comfort, give us light and strength.
These graces, needed to love each other in matrimony and , come from the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. He, who does not seek it, does not receive it. He will remain halfway there, with a union that does not become an image of that indivisible community between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Such union has yet to discover the unifying strength of love under the power of God. They stop at the threshold without quite crossing over into the extraordinary experience of “living as on.” They will lack the companionship and complicity, the help and strength of Jesus Christ Husband.
