Christian marriage is not a matter of two but three: the spouses and God. Marriage is a divine vocation. To love, one must go to the Source of love, which is God.
Text
“A positive experience of family communion is a true path to daily sanctification and mystical growth, a means for deeper union with God. The fraternal and communal demands of family life are an incentive to growth in openness of heart and thus to an ever fuller encounter with the Lord (…) If a family is centred on Christ, he will unify and illumine its entire life. Moments of pain and difficulty will be experienced in union with the Lord’s cross, and his closeness will make it possible to surmount them.” (The Joy of Love, 316 -317)
Commentary
Every person is called to love; marriage – family, is a way to live it. The everyday experience is those human difficulties that arise in every human project make divine strength and help necessary. My experience is that, although there may be illnesses, lack of economic resources, or various debacles, the marriage always become stronger and more united if one has recourse to divine grace.
For a human being to learn to love requires a long apprenticeship, a process, a maturation. For this, God, who is Love, can help us carry out a task rooted entirely in love. It is necessary to turn to that source of Love in order to be able to love, through continuous contact with Him so that with His help – trying not to let go of His hand – we can carry out that surrender in which we stake our earthly and eternal happiness.
