Those who love each other do not use their tongues like swords to hurt each other.
Text
“Married couples joined by love speak well of each other.” (The Joy of Love, n.113)
Commentary
Perhaps you have not realized that the tongue can be a dangerous weapon. The tongue can be a “world of iniquity” (James 3:6). If you care about loving, then be careful not to use it as dagger.
Hearing one parent speak ill of the other is something that disconcerts children and destroys them within. Whether they are united or separated, spouses have the obligation to protect each other´s image, just as children have a duty not to judge what they cannot understand in their parents´ stories.
Outside the home, one should be even more careful about what one says regarding the household´s intimacy and the defect and errors of one´s spouse (or children, or parents). Some things should not be talked about outside the home, except to ask for guidance – from those who can honestly give it – to solve a problem, and even then, one must be extremely careful and do it with respect, measure, and discretion that good love demands.
