Love is the struggle to love each other without ever giving up. Who does not have faults and failures? Their remedy is conjugal mercy. Hold each other´s hands and lift each other. Intimate trust and the joy of love spring forth from this conjugal mercy.

Text

“We need to find the right language, arguments and forms of witness that can help us reach the hearts of young people, appealing to their capacity for generosity, commitment, love, and even heroism, and in this way inviting them to take up the challenge of marriage with enthusiasm and courage.” (The Joy of Love, n.40)

Commentary

Young people are eager to love and be loved, find honest and successful love stories, and know that difficulties exist, but once faced and overcome, personal growth and the strengthening of a couple are huge. We need to show them specific examples of faithful and happy marriages. Mass media and new technologies are excellent instruments for this, in addition to offering models close to them.

Let´s tell them about our own marriage’s “real” happiness! Not the rosy moments, nor the sweetened and unreal facts! Let them see our faces full of life, joyful, eager to continue growing together, and let them see us strive to love each other under any circumstances! Let them experience how, in the struggle to love one another, despite our wounds and defeats – which are our limitations and failures – one never gives up! Moreover, let them see how we show mercy to each other. Such a glorious conjugal virtue. It consists in holding each other´s hands and lifting one another. Within that common mercy and its tenderness lies the humble acknowledgment of one´s mistakes, intimate trust, and the joy of love.
