Conjugal love is transcendent. It is not exhausted in the couple, in an “I” and a “thou,” but transcends their duality and makes them a single union. Moreover, this union is procreative, and their love radiates to their children. Furthermore, spouses, parents, and children form a household, the sphere of intimacy where they live their love together.
Text
“Every child growing within the mother’s womb is part of the eternal loving plan of God the Father. Each child has a place in God’s heart from all eternity; once he or she is conceived, the Creator’s eternal dream comes true.
Let us pause to think of the great value of that embryo from the moment of conception. We need to see it with the eyes of God, who always looks beyond mere appearances.” (The Joy of Love, n.168)
Commentary
This passage of Pope Francis highlights the great reality of a woman´s motherhood, which sometimes goes unnoticed. She is the only one who, more than having a womb, is the womb of life. Men lack a mother´s womb, where conception occurs, the fusion of the paternal sperm with the maternal ovum. In this maternal womb, the new being lives its gestation until birth. We are in the face of the wonder and miracle of motherhood. Pregnancy is not a right; it is a gift from God that allows both spouses to share in his creation. Human beings procreate; that is to say: we cooperate with God´s creation. Unlike other species that reproduce. However, it is the woman who, as a mother, conceives, gestates, and gives birth. Hence the irreplaceable role of the woman, as a mother, within a family, because she is the womb of life, the source of tenderness and warmth.
