Discover real marriage

Discover real marriage without euphemisms. It is neither a fairy tale, an impossible dream, nor an emotional cemetery. Young people are fed up with manipulations. We want honest and hard truths. When marriage is presented realistically, this love story seems more profoundly human and fascinating. Nothing appeals more than pure and hard truth.

Text

“We need to find the right language, arguments and forms of witness that can help us reach the hearts of young people, appealing to their capacity for generosity, commitment, love, and even heroism, and in this way inviting them to take up the challenge of marriage with enthusiasm and courage.” (The Joy of Love, n.40)

Commentary

Every married couple faces the challenge of preserving the life of the love they begot, making it grow, restoring its weariness and wounds. Together, husband and wife must navigate the oceans of life, its calm waters and storms, fortune and misfortune, health and sickness, and thus discover the joy of having one another when faced with any problem, dark night, or loneliness.

Seeing those who love each other in “combat mode” fighting side by side for their love when faced with adversity and danger threatening their union…is glorious—pure human beauty and grandeur.

We are the present generation – today´s youth – well capable of making definitive choices, even if we are told otherwise. We crave to love and be truly loved. No falsehoods, no substitutes. We are not afraid of commitment; the problem is that we do not understand what it means. Marriage has been presented to us as a restraint, as the loss of our freedom, sometimes as an enterprise destined to fail. We need to see it for what it truly is: a challenge of love, a challenge for love, a challenge worth risking our lives together. It is the only challenge that guarantees we will learn how to love each other honestly and powerfully.
