To commit oneself to the entire future of the beloved, as if it were one´s own, is a courageous thing. A challenge and conquest of love only suitable for the brave. It is the most glorious human spectacle.
Text
“It involves a series of obligations born of love itself, a love so serious and generous that it is ready to face any risk.” (The Joy of Love, n.132)
Commentary
It is quite a profound truth, full of consolation, that loving each other entirely, sincerely, and forever is an enormous conquest. The most glorious human experience; it takes courage and audacity. It entails letting go of your fears supporting and trusting each other to achieve your goals. It demands having that loyalty that reassures neither of us will ever give up and having that fidelity prevents one from ever abandoning the other. That is pure glory. The rest fades into insignificance.
It reminds me of a first-time skydiver. He must take that first step to jump into the abyss while he is insecure and fears the parachute will not work. If the bet is sincere, if there was training and preparation – which defines a good courtship – the probability that the parachute will open is exceptionally high, and the reward is unequaled. Facing the risk is the only way to enjoy its fruits. The advantage regarding love is that you can face the risks and difficulties together. And by doing it together, you are already overcoming the challenge. Togetherness is strength. If “on our own” we were afraid to love, togetherness makes us brave and bold.
Together we can do it. I do not renounce glorious love. What about you?
