“Each spouse is God’s means of helping the other to mature…Each marriage is a kind of “salvation history”… Might we say that the greatest mission of two people in love is to help one another become, respectively, more a man and more a woman.” (The Joy of Love, n.221)
Commentary
I find the image of marriage as a “salvation story,” in which both husband and wife can be for one another the intimate union of love and life that the Trinitarian God has placed in their path to make them grow. In what does God desire them to grow? In becoming more man and woman, more husband and wife, more father and mother, more capable of building a warm, welcoming home, full of companionship and help.
In the conjugal union, in each one, the intimate image and likeness of the Trinitarian God beat alive; the image of his infinite strength and fire, of his joy and fruitfulness in creating life.
This light and strength is not fantasy but realism. The intimate, authentic, and good heartbeat of the beauty of life itself, the reward of maturity and intimate union hid in facing together while loving each other, the trials and difficulties.
It gives light and strength to accept that marriage is neither easy nor perfect because two fragile and needy human beings form it, but with the possibility of improvement. Marriage is the reality where the love they have for each other comes from an inexhaustible source and drives them to fulfill their mission of accompanying one another, with faithful and loyal trust, of helping and waiting patiently for each other, out of love, to bring out the best in the other person.
