True love is for the brave. Only they deserve to achieve a beautiful, good, loyal, and faithful love. May it grow without dying.

Text

“Fiancés have the courage to be different. Don’t let yourselves get swallowed up by a society of consumption and empty appearances. What is important is the love you share, strengthened and sanctified by grace. You are capable of opting for a more modest and simple celebration in which love takes precedence over everything else.” (The Joy of Love, n.212)

Commentary

Many couples postpone getting married because they claim not to have the resources to celebrate a glamorous banquet. Sometimes, having those means, they invest more energy and money in onerous details than preparing themselves seriously to start their new life together.

With a more individualistic vision, others postpone their family plans, prioritize their career or job, buy an apartment or maybe a car, as if love were incompatible with progress. Then love cools down, commitment is diluted, and relationships are broken.

Does money prevent love and union? If it did, the vast majority of us would never have been born. In the past, even the richest had no electric water, no refrigerator, no television, no cell phone, and no headache pill. However, even the poorest loved each other, founded their families, and had their children, our grandparents.

In order to wed, the only requirement – in the strictest sense – is the will of the contracting parties, sincere and whole, manifested before the witnesses. The rest are accessories that can be dispensed with if the bride and groom have the strength, courage, and clarity not to succumb to the pressure of consumerism and the superficialities of the environment.

Vanity means emptiness. Do not organize your wedding on vanity. How beautiful are those weddings where simplicity reflects authenticity and coherence? It is exemplary for the guests to see that the bride and groom´s loving union is above any spotlight or dance floor.
