There is nothing more powerful and wiser than asking the Triune God, who is Love, to maintain the spouses´ love alive. God is moved by their common prayer, and he cloaks them with his Spirit.
Text
“Nor would it be good for them to arrive at the wedding without ever having prayed together, one for the other, to seek God’s help in remaining faithful and generous, to ask the Lord together what he wants of them.” (The Joy of Love, n.216)
Commentary
Reading these words by Pope Francis makes me wonder: how many engaged couples who come to us in order to prepare them for their marriage are men and women who pray for the life of their love? I think about all those couples who are already making a decision that will provide a stable direction for their future. If we pastors, by then, have not made them aware of the enormous power before God that comes from entrusting Him with the life of their love, we are late. Do they understand the absolute necessity of entrusting their love´s destiny to God in those youthful years? Have they learned to pray together as loving spouses? There is always time to start (even if they are a veteran marriage!) However, if anyone is still in their youth, I encourage you to ask yourself and your partner the following: do we know how to pray together, do we know how to ask God to take care of our love, and teach us to love each other better? We are still on time.
