“God sets the father in the family so that by the gifts of his masculinity he can be “close to his wife and share everything, joy, and sorrow, hope and hardship. It is not good for children to lack a father and to grow up before they are ready.” (The Joy of Love, n.177)
Commentary
Authentic parenthood must be rescued. It is the love of a woman, as a wife and mother, that has such power. Without that feminine presence and action, our men are lost, confused, impoverished when it comes to being the best husbands and fathers they could be. Without a woman´s love, a family does not grow but instead breaks down or does not even come into existence.
Today we see many single mothers and men who do not take responsibility for their possible fertility. It is worrying to see the consequences of children without paternal protection. Some fathers feel useless in the home, but that is where the wife and mother should open the “door,” allow and teach them how to enter their children´s lives. Children need their father when they come back from failing when they are afraid and distressed, and when they manage to find their path, they need a father who is always present. However, it is the wife and mother, due to her immediacy with the children since she conceived them in her womb and gave birth to them, who opens space, teaches, and lets the father be with the children.
In the maternal “birth” of fatherhood, one of the greatest miracles is that a woman, as wife and mother, knows how to teach her children to respect the father´s authority.
