“Spouses accept the challenge and aspiration of supporting one another, growing old together, and in this way reflecting God’s own faithfulness…At the same time, such fidelity would be spiritually meaningless were it simply a matter of following a law with obedient resignation…Every morning, on rising, we reaffirm before God our decision to be faithful, come what may in the course of the day. And all of us, before going to sleep, hope to wake up and continue this adventure, trusting in the Lord’s help. In this way, each spouse is for the other a sign and instrument of the closeness of the Lord, who never abandons us.” (The Joy of Love, n.319)
Commentary
Being aware that your path of sanctification carries the name and surname of your spouse and children and that this is your vocational commitment to God, you must renew it every morning. Each day of your marriage and your family cannot be lived distracted from the purpose they carry in God´s eyes and concerning your eternal destiny. The “yes” uttered at the wedding must be lived daily, from early in the morning, in advance, and if, when nighttime arrives, we wait for the new day in order to continue loving, love will remain young.
Husband and wife: you are a sign of God´s faithfulness in the family and for the whole world! What an enormous mission! You represent the love and fidelity of “the family of the Trinity.” And you have all its help.
